How the Morse Mandala’s came to be
My grandfather was fluent in Morse Code. So much so that he would hear it every time he read. In the late years of his life, he suffered a series of strokes that took away the mobility of his right side. We all did our best to communicate as his speech was very slurred and slow for the remaining ten years of his life. It was not until months after he passed that I had a realization- we could have all learned Morse Code to communicate with him.
This crushed me and inspired me to begin using Morse in my art. The first piece I conceptualized is “I Love You”, which in its complexity led to several other Morse creations to understand how to go about making it. Pictured here is “Akal”, a piece I made for my daughter after her birth. It was created using iridescent paint on black paper with a drafting board to create its grid.
The time investment and technical requirements to handprint these works is immense and I quickly realized that I wanted to find a way to share them more readily with the world.
Creating laser cut world is a natural progression of these pieces to have them produced in a way that is economical in time and money. To hear me speak about the evolution of these pieces in more depth, listen to my Patreon Post “Morse Evolution”
