Face Vase Still Life

$1,066.00

One of the main principles I explore with my work is the notion of time. It is a curious thing, that seems to flow effortlessly through our lives like sand in a timer, and at the same moment if we encounter something that points us to a particular memory, it also has the capability to seemingly fold in on itself. Every spring as the daffodils bloom there is an elation of the shift from winter and with it a recognition of impermeability, because they too will fade and another bloom replaces them.

This still life features items from various moments in my life that marked key awakenings. A dogwood tree, a bowl I mixed pigment in, my affectionately named Face Vase, Pakistani stacking stools and a mid-century table I procured while attending college. The pieces all together have their own narrative that had inspired me to place them as a composition, when a seemingly random balloon appeared in my studio space.

How did the balloon end up in the mix of it all? In this context, the balloon symbolizes a celebration. It made me think of birthday parties gone past and how interesting is it that we mark significant days- birthdays, anniversaries, etc. and at the same time every moment is significant in this journey of life. The closer we are able to hold our attention to the present moment, the greater our ability to recognize the beauty of all our experiences. Instead of looking forward or backward with any particular longing, we are then capable of holding what is fully, because everything else is just an illusion.
