Face Vase Still Life

$1,066.00

One of the main principles I explore in my work is the notion of time. It is a curious force that flows effortlessly through our lives, much like sand in an hourglass. Yet, when we encounter something that evokes a particular memory, time can fold in on itself, creating a beautiful complexity.

Every spring, as the daffodils bloom, I feel a wave of elation at the shift from winter, coupled with a recognition of impermanence, knowing they will inevitably fade, replaced by another bloom.

This still life features items from various moments in my life that marked key awakenings: a dogwood tree, a bowl I used to mix pigment, my affectionately named “Face Vase”, Pakistani stacking stools, and a mid-century modern table I acquired while in college. Each piece tells its own narrative, inspiring me to compose them together.

Then came the unexpected: a seemingly random balloon appeared in my studio. How did it end up in the mix? In this context, the balloon symbolizes celebration. It took me back to birthday parties of the past and made me ponder how we mark significant days- birthdays anniversaries, etc. Yet every moment is significant in this journey of life.

The closer we hold our attention to the present moment, the greater our ability to recognize the beauty of our experiences. Rather than longing for what lies ahead of behind us, we can fully embrace the present because everything else is just an illusion.
