Awaken Dreamer
Inspired by the Zen Master’s calligraphy practice, I began exploring painting in a manner that echoes handwriting. Imagine a painting that serves as a personal signature, created in a single session without edits or additional layers. At the time of its completion, I was a resident at Furnace Mountain Zen Center in Clay City, Kentucky. Deep into my personal practice of Zen, I felt a sense of channeling, as the piece depicts a figure resting amidst tousled blankets.
The only color used in the piece is Ultramarine Blue, derived from lapis lazuli- a hue traditionally associated with royalty, particularly in the ancient context of Egypt. To enhance the vial depth, I’ve incorporated white, adding variation in texture and richness. This piece is considered a “seconds” work due to small markings from its age and wear of transportation over time.
