Awaken Dreamer
Inspired by the Zen Master’s calligraphy practice, I began exploring painting in a manner that echos handwriting. The entire painting is like a signature as it was created in a single session without edits or additional layers. At the time of its completion, I was a resident at Furnace Mountain Zen Center in Clay City, Ky. Deep in my personal practice of zen and clearly channeling the conscious state of mind, as the piece shows a figure resting in a bed of tousled blankets. The only color used in the piece is Ultramarine Blue, which traditionally is made from lapis lazuli and is a color associated with royalty, especially in the context of Egypt. White was then applied to the painting to create variation in depth and additional textural interest.
This piece is considered a “seconds” work, as it has some small markings on it from it’s age and transportation over time
12” x 18”
