Just a Leaf in a River
As part of my practice, I am always exploring landscapes with a curiosity of how to portray them in experience rather than literal objectification. Shortly after my grandfather passed away, I ventured to North Georgia where I took a series of underwater photographs in the Chatahoochee river.
One of the images contained a single leaf drifting in the open space of water. It reminded me of the vessel we are as a person on this planet and how temporary it is to be granted an opportunity to journey through this life. The leaf shown in the center of this piece is the symbol of that specific moment and it is surrounded by the wave of influence that we both receive and give in our relationships. We cannot walk through this world without affecting other people and we are all floating in the same stream, like the leaf in the river. At the time of my grandfathers passing, autumn leaves were falling outside of the window where he stayed. The bright colors chosen for this work are inspired by that transitional time and how there is a natural cycle in everything we witness in nature, including us.
